I started a writing class today called #fiercelyfocused, to help me complete the book I've been wanting to write for a long time now. The whole idea of writing a book has always felt overwhelming, because I have no idea where to start or what to do. I've had a huge realization over the last few weeks about what happens when I feel overwhelmed, and what I can do to stop myself from being immobilized with fear.
Most people think flying an airplane is hard, but just like anything else, it's easy when you know what you're doing. When I was a pilot, I had a checklist for every phase of flight. I would never dream of running the "Before Landing" checklist before the "Taxi" checklist. I had to get the airplane off of the ground first, and then we could continue.
Writing a book (or anything else I don't know how to do), has always felt daunting because I don't have a checklist. I look at the finish line of what I want to accomplish, and allow myself to feel overwhelmed because I don't know the steps to take to get there. If I think back, I had no idea what I needed to do to become an airline pilot. I just knew I needed to take one step at a time, and the first step was to learn how to fly.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. (I don't know who came up with that saying, but it seems very relevant, crazy as it sounds.) All I really need to know to proceed is the very next step. I don't need to know how to publish a book before I write the book. I just need to take one step at a time and create my own checklist.
Let's fly. Journey on..............
