We have all kinds of anti-bullying programs in our schools. We teach our children that it is wrong to bully, that it's not nice to pick on someone for being different, that it's not ok to pick on someone smaller and weaker than you or that has a different opinion than you.
Then political season rolls around, and the airwaves and the dinner tables and the Facebook pages are covered in hatred and nastiness and bullying. I wonder, what kind of message does this send to our kids? What are we really trying to teach our children? Do they learn from our example or our words? What else is possible here?
I have some pretty definite points of view about certain candidates as well, and my first instinct was to share them here. Then I stepped back and looked at what that would create. Instead of spewing hate towards the candidate I don't like, I'm wondering what else I can do to actually create the change I would like to see in the world? If we all feel hopeless to change anything, then is all hope surely lost?
What is the world you desire to live in? What can you do to create that today?
I desire to create a world where each individual is seen as an individual and not someone separate from me, but rather a human being that thinks and feels and hurts and laughs just as I do. I desire a world where we truly see each and every person as an individual, not a category that we can judge based on race, religion, or political party. Not all republicans are assholes, not all democrats are assholes, not all Muslims are Isis. I desire to create a world full of compassion towards those that are in need, no matter who they are and where they come from. I desire to create a world where we dissolve the barriers created by fear, and stop the insanity of hatred of someone just because they are different - be it republican, democrat, or Muslim.
If we take a close look at our words and actions, are we spewing the same hatred we are condemning in another? What could we choose instead?
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead
What choices could you make today to create the world you desire to live in?
